In 1995, Steve did a spread (pun intended) and exclusive interview for Playgirl, April issue. Unfortunately, he bared about as much as he's done on General Hospital. Modest little fellow. Following is an except from the interview with Charmian Carl.

It was a balmy night in the Hollywood Hills. The studio windows were opened wide to let in the evening air and sparkling lights from the city below. I watched as Steve was being readied for his next shot in the shower. A soft breeze gently tugged at his thick, blond mane of hair. His eyes appeared to be a more sparkling blue than I had remembered. His mouth seemed more defined. His body was stronger and more proportioned. Suddenly, it dawned on me - Steve (a.k.a. Jason Quartermaine) had become a man.

When I first met him two years ago, I found him to be an adorable, sexy surfer-dude. But with time, Steve has developed a powerful presence, a sense of himself. His goals are guided by his understanding and experience of life - and his looks have refined into pure masculine perfection.

Are you enjoying yourself more at 24 than when we last met?

Yes! I think right now is a time of big transition in my life. I've become a man. Yet, I've got my whole life ahead of me. I know what I want to do business-wise and there's a lot to do, but it's time to be responsible for myself.

You're definitely more mature than a lot of people who are older. Do you think it's because you lead such a demanding life?

I'm pretty tough on myself in that I always feel like I have to be doing something. I feel guilty if I sit around for a day and do nothing. It's ridiculous. I shouldn't feel that way. I think it has a lot to do with being in L.A., in the entertainment field, because you are your business and you always have to work or do something to further your career.

Describe your ideal woman, physically.

There you go again.

Did I ask you that question two years ago?

Yep.

Well, has it changed?

I'd say I'd have to be more partial to blonds now. I don't know why. I've had girlfriends who've had dark hair and dark eyes, and I'm just usually more attracted to blond hair and blue eyes. If the chemistry is there, then it's there, you know?

Important point - good chemistry is hard to find.

Yes, it is. It's important for me to find a woman who I can be myself with - who I'm friends with.

If you met someone who fit all those requirements, but the sex was mediocre, would you still want to remain with her?

I don't know. I was watching TV the other day and a guy said, "When the sex is great, it's 5% of the relationship. When it's bad, it's about 50%." That's very true. I've had relationships where the sex was great and where the sex wasn't that great. But, I have to agree. For me, it had to be good.

What constitutes good sex and what constitutes bad sex?

Well, five times a day is good, right?

Have you gone at it five times a day?

(Laughs) Come on...you know how it is when you first meet somebody and the chemistry is there.

What would constitute exploring for you?

Don't ask me that. What are you trying to do to me? (laughs)

What other projects have you been working on recently?

Well, I did a movie [called] Cybertracker. It was on Cinemax, and then on video. Right now, I'm getting ready to do the sequel.

Is it a martial arts movie?

Yeah, the guy I play is [friends with] martial artist Don Wilson. I've studied with him since I was 11. I've always trained with him. It's been great, and it's what I like to do. I love to do action movies.

Like Van Damme or Seagal?

Yes, but the thing that gets me is, I love to act. That's probably the most important thing to me. I'm not saying you can't act in action movies, but you really don't get the type of roll where you can expand. On General Hospital this year I finally get to do some great stuff.

What scenes are you proudest of?

They were probably this year on the show, when my mom [Monica, played by Leslie Charleson] tells me she has breast cancer and the scene immediately following, when I go in and talk to my dad about it. Those are the two I've liked the most out of anything I've ever done.

Are you going out to clubs now?

I tried the whole scene. I'm not a club person, really. It tends to mess everything else up, career wise. You're out drinking all the time. You're not getting up. You're not doing what you're suppose to be doing. For months I was out dating and drinking and having a great time, going to clubs and stuff, but how long can you do that?

Did that lifestyle leave you feeling empty?

Sure, when you go home and you're drunk, yeah. Then you wake up and have to go to work. That's just not for me. Maybe a couple of weekends, fine, but....

Are you still surfing?

Not as much as I'd like. It's sad because I haven't surfed in six months. The water here is so polluted, it really makes me sick. I see a lot of my friends getting sick from surfing all the time. Now I just take a trip or two to Hawaii every year and surf for a week. I love Hawaii.

Do you believe you've sinned because you're no longer a virgin?

(Smiling) How do you know I'm not?

I don't know, I kind of get that feeling.

Well, I guess I have broken a few commandments.

What's your birth sign?

[My birthday is] June 28, 1970. I'm a pretty true Cancer. I like to stay at home, and feel safe there with the person I love.

If you could experience any fantasy from science fiction, what would it be?

I'd probably like to time travel. I'd like to go back. There's so much to learn that is really amazing.

What time period would you like to go back to?

I suppose the 1940s and `50s and then hundreds and hundreds of years ago.... Yeah, time travel, that would be cool. I'd like that.

You might not spend too much time at home with your girl, though.

Hmmm.... Come to think of it, you're right.
