<quote>Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and his party's presidential candidate in 2008, led the opposition to the repeal and said the vote was a sad day in history.

{snip}

He and others opposed to lifting the ban said the change could harm the unit cohesion that is essential to effective military operations, particularly in combat, and deter some Americans from enlisting or pursuing a career in the military.

Wait! Isn't it doing that already? Aren't some Americans, gay Americans, kept from enlisting or pursuing a careeer in the military because of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell?" Isn't unit cohesion harmed when members are unceremoniously thrown out? Isn't time, effort and money wasted while these witch hunts are executed? Why are you worried about a "could" and not about a confirmed "does"?

Didn't your year long report say otherwise? Doesn't every other military organization that allows gays to serve openly disprove your point?

Please remember, Senator, that the dreaded gays are ALREADY SERVING IN THE MILITARY RIGHT NOW! They are in the units, in the barracks, in the bathrooms, on the radio, serving the food right now. In fact, they are even in the Senate Chambers AS WE SPEAK! (Or have they already gone on vacation?)

I'll tell you what's sad....

Oh, right, politician, got it.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Grinch, please stay out of Whoville.

What is it about computer games involving blood that really makes my day? First it was Gabriel Knight, culminating in BLOOD OF THE SACRED, BLOOD OF THE DAMN, when I knew I had found an art form I thoroughly enjoyed. Yes, it was clunky and the puzzles sucked and every thing that could go wrong on a project did. But not only did it have an engrossing story, it showed exactly how immersive a game could be.

Now it's Dragon Age, where I spent 90 hours on one character and various other times on 4 more. Not counting the 20 hour expansion. That's about $1 for two hours of entertainment, and not a lot besides MMOs are that cheap.

Take the plunge, give it a try. You can be anything you want to be. Just remember to save the world.

I mean, it's not like the administrator is suddenly going to take offense about my doodles, since he is I -- or some such philosophical idea. I can post what I want, when I want, as large as I want, and not fear some small minded bureaucrat makes it all go away and my name ends up <strike>slashed</strike> through.

That way I can post this...

...and not have someone running away screaming because you saw a bare nipple on the Internet (and not even a shield! What is the world coming to!!).

So, over time, I'm going to move my LiveJournal entries so that they are completely posted here (leaving just exceprts on the LiveJerk site) and then all new entries will appear here (along with an excerpt on the LiveJerk site). That way, anyone can comment, as dirty as they want, without fear of religous zealots holding that over your head and blackmailing you to the right. Or not-so-left, which might be the center.

Not that I actually do a lot on a blog, mind you. I typically don't have enough in my brain to warrent much space -- I'm more "see pretty, save pretty, move on to the next pretty". (And thanks to all of you who support my pretty-thing habit!)

And since I am a pack rat, and have collected all this stuff, I thought the least I could do is regurgitate it all back to you...well, in case there's anyone out there at all!

A decade ago, I found a book, sitting in the middle of the parking lot at work. Who's it was, how it got there, I had no idea. Old, worn, travelled. A book like none other. I opened it, and the pictures inside moved. I carelessly brushed my fingers across the page and found myself there. But that's a different story.

About this time, two years ago, I stumbled onto a mystery in the New Mexico desert. My parents have a summer home in the Rockies, I was driving to Sante Fe, and...well, it's not really important, is it? I turned off the highway onto a dirt road, then another dirt road, and another, until I ended up at a barbed wire fence. I found a cleft, in the ground, near an extinct volcano. I found Zandi at his trailer who pointed the way. I was drawn to this patch of land, following some inner calling....

I fell down a rabbit hole, and like Alice, was never the same again.

There is a secret, buried deep below. I was not the only one called to the desert. I was not the only person in the city beneath. For several weeks, I and others started the Journey, walked the Path and found the Least. Until the day the lights went out, the giant air fans slowed their spin and the Great Zero stuttered to a halt.

The DRC had pulled the plug. The Restoration was no more. The story was over.

For two years I have mourned the loss, the waste, a piece of my heart still buried down a shaft in the New Mexico desert. Even though I've seen my friends through their struggles, glimpsed their new home, restored the Bahro and finished that story, I always wondered about the before. About the civilization they stumbled upon and the secrets, the history slumbering below. Until last week, when my KI beeped once, the purple glow lighting up the bookshelf it rested on. Power must have been restored. The Great Zero again revolves. The City breathes. I must go back, back to the Cleft, back to the Journey, back to D'Ni.

I've given my three weeks notice at work, started storing my furniture and giving away all that I own. My KI is again strapped on my arm, a familiar weight and companion. I do not know if I can retrace my drive in the desert, don't know if the call will once again sing in my heart as I get close. Even if I can't, even if it doesn't, if I cannot find the Cleft, I am sure my linking book will still transport me to my Relto, and the Ages waiting patiently on their shelves. I can return. I can continue. I can finally restore what was lost.

D'Ni lives.

And I know my ending is far from being written.
